Abstract

The research objective was to make and determine the characteristics of activated carbon on carbonization using single drum and chemical activation using diferrent activators agent and concentrations of activators. This research used Factorial Block Randomized Design with two treatment factors and three times repetition for each treatment. First factor was type activators A1 (H3PO4) and A2 (NaOH). Second factor was the concentrations of activators B₁ (10%), B₂ (20%), and B3 (30%). The parameters observed were water content, ash content, volatile matter and absorbtion of Iodin. The result of the research showed that A1B3 is the treatment with the lowest water content 2,22% and the highest is 6,01% on A2B1 treatments. The lowest ash content is 5,07% with the treatment of A2B1 while the higest is 9,68% with the treatment of A1B3. The treatment A2B1 showed the lowest volatile matter is 11,17% while the highest is 18% with the treatment of A1B3. The lowest adsorbtion of Iodin is 687,93 mg/g with the treatment of A2B1 while the higest is 959,54 mg/g with the treatment of A1B3. Overall the characteristics of activated carbon is in compliance with SII No. 02258-88 , except for the absorption of iodine by treatment with A1B1 709.42 mg/g and A2B1 687.9 mg/g with a minimum requirement is 750 mg/g .
