Abstract
Background: Chewing on one side is one of the bad habit that are still practiced by society. The impact of this habit is plaque buildup, TMJ disorders, mandibular deflection and deviation, and asymmetry of the mastication muscles. Severe asymmetry can interfere with facial aesthetics. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of the habit of chewing on one side of the lips on asymmetry when rest and smiling. Method: This was an analytical study with a cross sectional design on 36 students of Sriwijaya University who matched the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects were divided into 2 groups, 18 subjects chewing on one side and 18 subjects chewing on both sides. Each subject was taken twice, when the lips were rest then the lips were smiling and then calculated using CorelDraw2024 Software to determine lip asymmetry. Data then was analyzed using Chi-Square test. Results: In the one sided chewing group, 61.1% experienced lip asymmetry when rest, 38.9% experienced lip asymmetry when smiling. In the two sided chewing group, 22.2% experienced lip asymmetry when smiling and no lip asymmetry was found when rest. The results of the chi-square test showed a p-value of p <0.001 indicating that there was a significant effect between the habit of chewing on one side and the asymmetry of the lips when rest. While the results of the chi-square test showed a p-value of p = 0.471 indicating that there was no significant effect between the habit of chewing on one side and the asymmetry of the lips when smiling. Conclusion: There is a significant effect between the habit of chewing on one side and the asymmetry of the lips when rest but there is no significant effect on the asymmetry of the lips when smiling, and there is a significant effect between the chewing and non-chewing sides where the asymmetry occurs on the non-chewing side.
