Abstract

Hexavalent chromium metal ions possess carcinogenic, toxic, and corrosive properties, and they are highly soluble in water, thus requiring treatment to prevent environmental contamination. Treatment can be performed using the adsorption method. This study utilized Fe3O4/SDS composite as an adsorbent to remove hexavalent chromium metal ions with variations in pH, contact time, concentration, and temperature. The Fe3O4/SDS (5:1) composite was synthesized using the coprecipitation method and characterized using XRD, BET, SEM-EDX, and VSM. The synthesized Fe3O4/SDS (5:1) appeared as black powder. The XRD results of Fe3O4/SDS showed diffraction patterns at 2θ angles of 30.218˚, 35.495˚, 43.220˚, 57.040˚, and 62.771˚ with a crystal size of 8.98 nm. The crystal planes (200), (103), (004), (321), and (400) indicated an inverse spinel structure for the composite. Based on the BET results, the surface area of the composite was 79.689 m²/g. The SEM morphology of the composite showed that the surface of Fe3O4 particles was coated with small, nearly spherical particles of SDS distributed heterogeneously. The EDX spectrum indicated the presence of iron, oxygen, carbon, and sodium elements. The VSM characterization results showed a hysteresis curve with a saturation magnetization value of 53.18688 emu/g, indicating superparamagnetic properties. The optimum conditions were obtained at a concentration of 200 mg/L, a contact time of 90 minutes, and a temperature of 60˚C. The adsorption capacity was 33.4105 mg/g, with an efficiency percentage of 68.18%. The adsorption kinetics followed the Pseudo-Second-Order model (R² = 0.9999) with K₂ = 0.07137 g/mg·minute and Qₑ = 11.7786 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model (R² = 0.9732) with Qₘ = 26.66667 mg/g and Kₗ = 0.010121 L/mg. The adsorption process of the Fe3O4/SDS composite for hexavalent chromium metal ions was endothermic and non-spontaneous, with ΔH˚ = 5.3760 kJ/mol and ΔS˚ = 0.0105 kJ/K·mol.
