Abstract
Background : Collagen gel provides a moist environment that supports wound healing after tooth extraction. Fish skin can be an alternative source of collagen because of amino acid components and biocompatibility equal with mammalian collagen. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the application of Siamese catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) collagen gel on the number of macrophages, fibroblasts, angiogenesis, and collagen density during the wound healing process after tooth extraction of male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Method : An in vivo experimental study was conducted in November 2025 at the Biochemistry Laboratory and Animal House, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This study consisted of 4groups, each group consisting of 3 rats with 0,2% hyaluronic acid gel as positive control groups and 15%, 30%, and 45% Siamese catfish collagen gell as treatment groups. After left mandibular incisor was extracted, gel was applied into the tooth socket and euthanized on day 3, 5, and 7 for histopathological examination. The data was analyzed using Paired T test, Wilcoxon test, Independent T test, Mann Whitney test, Kruskall Wallis test, and OneWay ANOVA test. Result : The results of this study demonstrated that the 30% catfish collagen gel groups, the smallest number of macrophages was found on the 7th day, the number of fibroblasts increased on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th days, the number of angiogenesis increased on the 3rd and 5th days and decreased on the 7th day, and the collagen density increased on the 3rd and 7th days. Conclusion : There was a difference in effectiveness between Siamese catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) collagen gel and 0,2% hyaluronic acid gel on wound healing after tooth extraction in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus).
