Abstract
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) and bacterial pneumonia are two globally significant infectious diseases, with high morbidity and mortality rates. In Indonesia, TB prevalence is the second highest in the world, while pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death. These two diseases often show similar radiologic features, making them difficult to distinguish. This study aimed to evaluate comparison in high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP) levels as an inflammatory biomarker in patients with pulmonary TB and bacterial pneumonia at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital (RSMH) Palembang. Methods: This study used an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach conducted at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital (RSMH) Palembang. The subjects were patients with pulmonary TB and bacterial pneumonia who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The hsCRP levels were measured using the immunochemical method and then analyzed to determine the comparison between the two groups. Results: The results showed a significant difference in hsCRP levels between patients with pulmonary TB and bacterial pneumonia (p<0.05). The average hsCRP levels in bacterial pneumonia patients were higher than those in pulmonary TB patients, reflecting the different levels of inflammation in the two diseases and can be used as a diagnostic parameter to differentiate between the two conditions. Conclusion: Differences in hsCRP levels may be an important parameter in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary TB and bacterial pneumonia, particularly in cases with similar radiological features. These findings make an important contribution to the development of more effective biomarker-based diagnostic approaches in patient management in Indonesia.
