Abstract
Steel is the basic vital to the industry. AU segments of life, rangingfrom /citchen appliances, transportation, power generators, automotive components to building and bridge frameworks using Steel. The purpose of this study was to determine the toughness, hardness, microstructure ofAISI 4140 Steel before and after treatment. The data and calculations used in accordance with the test results and the liter atur e. Testing hardness AISI4140 Steel specimen using Rockwell C machine gained an average value of non- heat treatment is 33.14 HRC, quenching oil SAE Mesran HRC 40 to 51.20, and 56.06 HRC after cryogenic treatment. In terms of AISI 4140 Steel used Charpy Impact Testing Machine, obtained an average value of energy to break the AISI 4140 Steel specimen in the specimen non- heat treatment is 13.29 J, the specimens were quenched in oil is 7.12 J and the specimen given treatment and oil quenching cryogenic is 8.07 J. Tests get the growth microstructure of martensite and carbides on oil quenching and cryogenic treatment Steel AISI 4140.
