Abstract

This study aims to analyze the patterns and trends of daily rainfall in Northern Sumatra across different phases of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), namely Positive IOD, Negative IOD, and Neutral IOD. The research utilizes data from BMKG observation stations, including Sultan Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station, Malikussaleh Meteorological Station, FL Tobing Meteorological Station, Binaka Meteorological Station, North Sumatra Climatology Station, Kualanamu Climatology Station, and Deli Serdang Geophysical Station, covering the period from 1985 to 2023. The study employs a quantitative approach using secondary data. Data analysis is conducted using the Probability Density Function (PDF) to examine the characteristics of daily rainfall, followed by simple linear regression to identify rainfall trends. The PDF analysis reveals that during the Positive IOD phase, the probability of low daily rainfall is higher than that of heavy rainfall, whereas during the Negative IOD phase, moderate to heavy rainfall occurs more frequently. Meanwhile, during the Neutral IOD phase, the rainfall distribution tends to be more stable, with a more even intensity variation compared to the other two phases. The trend analysis indicates that some locations show an increasing trend in rainfall over the long term, while others exhibit stable or decreasing trends. Additionally, the average rainfall in North Sumatra is generally higher than in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of rainfall dynamics and serve as a reference for hydrometeorological disaster mitigation in Northern Sumatra.
