Abstract

Job stress is one of the biggest challenges faced by workers in various sectors, especially the health sector which focuses on human health and safety. Nurses often experience high work stress due to great responsibility and demands for optimal service. The Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI, 2019) stated that 50.9% of nurses in Indonesia experience work stress with symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, unfriendly attitudes, and lack of rest due to excessive workload. Based on a preliminary study using Douglas calculations regarding the list of nurse work shifts at the Prabumulih City Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in December 2023, an imbalance was found between the need for nurses and the number of nurses available, especially in the afternoon shift which lacked 6 nurses. This can affect the physical and psychological conditions of nurses. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between workload, gender, age, length of service, last education, marital status, work shifts with work stress. This study is a quantitative study using statistical software and univariate and bivariate analysis was carried out with the Chi-Square test. The population in this study were nurses working in the general medical, medical insurance, general surgical, surgical insurance, and ICU departments at the Prabumulih City Regional General Hospital (RSUD) with a sample size of 84 respondents. The results of the analysis stated that there was a relationship between age, length of service, last education, work shift, workload with work stress (p-value <0.05). While for gender and marital status there was no relationship with work stress (p-value>0.05). Hospitals can provide stress management programs such as seminars, balanced shift systems and psychosocial approaches among nurses, while nurses can manage stress with healthy lifestyles and work-life balance.
