Abstract
The intensive application of pesticides in rice cultivation serves as a primary strategy for pest control. However, chronic pesticide exposure has been associated with long-term adverse health effects, particularly neurotoxic symptoms. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between individual characteristics, pesticide exposure variables, and neurotoxic symptoms among rice farmers. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed, utilizing purposive sampling to recruit 110 pesticide-using rice farmers as participants. Data collection involved structured observations using checklists, interviews via questionnaires, and physical environmental measurements, including wind direction assessment via a fan anemometer. Analytical methods comprised univariate analysis, bivariate chi-square testing, and multivariate analysis through a predictive multiple logistic regression model. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between neurotoxic symptoms and two variables: personal protective equipment (PPE) usage (p=0.004) and spraying frequency (p=0.015) among rice farmers in Awal Terusan Village. Non-significant variables included age, sex, body mass index, smoking habits, pesticide variety, spraying duration, and spraying direction. Multivariate analysis identified sex as the most influential predictor of neurotoxic symptoms (p=0.001; PR=0.108; 95% CI=0.030–0.389). In conclusion, PPE utilization and spraying frequency demonstrated significant correlations with neurotoxic symptoms, while sex emerged as the predominant predictive variable. To mitigate pesticide exposure and associated neurotoxic risks, farmers are advised to adopt enhanced protective measures, specifically anti-dust chemical respirator gas masks and nitrile rubberex gloves. Additionally, reducing weekly spraying frequency and restricting pesticide application to necessity-based rather than routine preventive use is recommended.
