Abstract
Mosquitoes of the Culex genus are vectors of filariasis and other diseases that impact public health. The excessive use of synthetic larvicides has the potential to cause negative impacts on the environment and human health, thus requiring alternative botanical larvacides. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of cashew (Anacardium occidentale) leaves as a botanical larvicide against third-instar Culex sp. larvae. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with five treatments (0 %, 8.5 %, 9 %, 10 %, and 0.01 % abate as positive control) and five replications, each containing 25 larvae. Mortality rates were observed for 24 hours, and the LC50 value was determined using probit analysis. The research results indicate that cashew leaf extract affects the behavior, morphology, and mortality of Culex larvae. There was no significant difference in larval mortality among treatments (p > 0.05). A significant difference was observed between each extract treatment and the positive and negative controls (p > 0.05). The 10 % concentration showed the highest mortality rate (82,4 %), while the LC50 value was 1,986 %, which had a relatively strong effect on larval mortality. These findings suggest that cashew leaf extract has the potential to be used as an environmentally friendly botanical larvicide.
