Abstract

Smoking behavior has increased and is no longer limited to adults, but has become an alarming phenomenon among adolescents. This suggests the need for an in-depth understanding of the factors that influence smoking behavior among adolescents, especially in social interactions that can strengthen or inhibit smoking. This study aims to analyze the social interaction patterns of adolescents and their relationship with smoking behavior. The research method uses secondary data analysis from a thesis entitled “Analysis of Smoking Behavior in Sriguna Plaju Palembang Junior High School Students: A Study of the Theory of Planning Behavior” with a qualitative case study approach. The data consisted of FGDs conducted with 6 student smokers as key informants and in-depth interviews conducted with 6 close friends of smokers and 5 teachers of Sriguna Plaju Junior High School Palembang. Thematic analysis was used to process the data, validated through triangulation of sources, methods, and data. The results showed that adolescents smoke to increase self-confidence, avoid social exclusion, and cope with stress. External factors such as peer influence, social environment, and parents' smoking habits reinforce this behavior. On the internal side, low individual motivation and nicotine dependence are barriers to quitting smoking. Collaboration between the government, schools and families is crucial in reducing the prevalence of adolescent smoking.
