Abstract
Penjemuran River is polluted by Sukawinatan Landfill waste, reducing water quality and hampering fisheries cultivation. This study aims to analyze the effect of substrate variations on the effectiveness of Free Water Surface (FWS) constructed wetland in removing pollutants. Testing was held using a laboratory scale model by 60 cm × 30 cm × 50 cm, filled with Penjemuran River water that was filtered using cotton. The system was tested with three substrates, sand and gravel, biochar, and zeolite, using water jasmine. The hydraulic residence time (HRT) was set at 24 hours. The results showed that the biochar substrate had the highest effectiveness in reducing ammonia by 83.2%. Zeolite was superior in reducing COD by 81.9% and TSS by 75%. Meanwhile, sand and gravel showed effectiveness in reducing BOD by 89.4%. The pH value remained stable in the range of 6–8 in accordance with class II water quality standards based on PP No. 22 of 2021. For these results, a field-scale was designed with a biochar and zeolite substrates combined to achieve optimal efficiency. The estimated building system cost was calculated to support implementation in the field. This research provides an innovative and sustainable solution in river water treatment to support aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries sector.
