Abstract

Purple corn is a food commodity that has not been widely cultivated because it is still not well known. The plant breeding program is a program to develop existing corn varieties to be superior. This study aims to evaluate the growth and production of several purple corn accessions to produce purple baby corn and purple shelled corn as well as evaluate the segregation of purple color in plants. This research was carried out in collaboration with farmers on agricultural land in the Pemulutan, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra and this research was carried out from August to November 2024. This research was carried out using the Randomized Block Design (RBD) research method which consists of 4 blocks and each block has 3 plots. The accession used in this study consisted of UJ1xU, UJ2xU, and UJ3xU. The data obtained is analyzed using the Anova (Analysis of Variance) test with F table and if the difference is obvious, it is followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test α = 5%, then the segregation value will be calculated based on color. The study showed that plant growth increased gradually, for all baby corn and shelled corn production, there were many unreal differences, the highest sugar content was found in the UJ1xU accession but the results of the respondents' preference test were much in favor of UJ2xU accession. The accession of UJ1xU, UJ2xU, and UJ3xU is still segregated because there are still colors other than purple. The selected plant criteria for seed selection and production are parent plants that have have purple baby corn and purple shalled corn cob and purple seeds.
