Abstract

This study aims to understand the discrimination of women in the film "Gadis Kretek" by using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics as a data analysis tool in the form of scene/image pieces, dialog, and monologues in the film. Movies can be an effective medium in spreading a message and understanding to the public. The film "Gadis Kretek" was chosen by the researcher on the basis that this film highlights the issue of discrimination experienced by women in the 1960s which is still relevant today. The results show that there are forms of discrimination against women, in this case experienced by Dasiyah, contained in the film "Gadis Kretek" in the form of Dasiyah being prohibited from entering the sauce room, Dasiyah not getting freedom, limited tasks and roles of women, knowledge that is seen as low, Dasiyah's existence is considered negative, limited placement of women, and verbal and nonverbal violence. In addition, the results also reveal the relationship between signifiers and signs in producing the meaning of women's discrimination in the film "Gadis Kretek" which is represented by Dasiyah's character through scene cuts, dialog and monologues. Dasiyah struggles against the discrimination she experiences, which considers women unfit to have a role in the kretek industry. Through dialog and interaction between characters, the film successfully conveys messages about the challenges faced by women in fighting for equality and recognition in society.
