Abstract

Diarrhea is one of the main causes of infant mortality in the world, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the relationship between household environmental sanitation and toddler characteristics with the incidence of diarrhea in Ogan Ilir Regency in 2023. This study uses secondary data obtained from the results of the Field Learning Experience (PBL) of the Faculty of Public Health, Sriwijaya University in 2023. The PBL sample size was 1210 toddlers so that the eligible sample in the study was 1056 toddlers. This study used an analytical observational study design with a cross-sectional approach. Univariate analysis was carried out to see the frequency distribution of each variable, while bivariate analysis used the chi-square test to determine the relationship between independent variables (toddler age, toddler gender, maternal age, maternal education, maternal occupation, exclusive breastfeeding, clean water source, drinking water source, physical quality of clean water, household toilets, toddler feces disposal behavior, MCK facilities, residential density, type of house floor, CTPS) and dependent variables (incidence of diarrhea in toddlers). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that the age of toddlers (p-value = 0.014) and housing density (p-value = 0.032) had a significant relationship with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in Ogan Ilir Regency. However, other variables such as clean water sources, drinking water sources, physical quality of clean water, household toilets, types of house floors, and handwashing habits with soap did not show a significant relationship. Efforts to increase public awareness regarding environmental sanitation and toddler parenting patterns are expected to reduce the incidence of diarrhea in Ogan Ilir Regency.
