Abstract

The integra tion of digita l tools in educa tion often overlooks the potentia l of cultura l enrichment in tea ching ma teria ls, espec ia lly in enha ncing writ ing skills. This study pioneers the development of e-modules infused with South Suma tra 's loca l wisdom, a iming to fill th is ga p by offering a unique blend of tra dition a nd technology in short story text writin g. Employinga Resea rch and Development (R&D) a pproach, this study involved a needs a na lysis, prototype development, a nd itera tive testing pha ses, including sma ll group tria ls a nd field tria ls with 60 students from SMA Ne geri 1 Lempuing Ja ya a nd feedba ck from two Indonesia n langua ge tea chers. Da ta were collected through questionna ires, interviews, document checklists, a nd pretest-posttest mea sures to eva lua te the e-modules' pra ctica lity, va lidity, a nd effectiveness. The crea ted e-module, integra ting procedures for writin g short story texts with South Suma tra 's loca l wisdom, a chieved a va lida tion score of 81.93% (va lid), a pra ctica lity score of 93.4% (very pra ctica l), a nd demonstra ted a sign ifica nt improvement in students' writin g sk ills, with a pretest-posttest improvement showing a 2-ta iled p-va lue of <0.0001. This e-module not only bridges the cultura l ga p in digita l educationa l resources but a lso highlights the effica cy of loca l wisdom in enhancing educa tiona l outcomes. The significa nt improvements in student writing sk ills underscore the potentia l for such cultura lly integra ted e-modules to serve a s a model for future educationa l ma teria ls. These findings a dvocate for a broa der a doption and development of cultura lly releva nt educa tiona l tools, empha sizing their role in preserving cultura l herita ge a nd improving educa tiona l qua lity.1. IntroductionThe Merdeka Curriculum empha sizes integra ting digita l media in educa tion, focusing on developing e-modules to enha nce lea rning outcomes, pa rticula rly in short story writin g for senior high school students in Indonesia . This stra tegic integra tion promotes independent lea rning, thorough content exploration, a nd efficient instructiona l time use (Cook et a l., 2008; Mącznik et al., 2015). E-modules a re vita l for a lignin g educa tiona l pra ctices with contempora ry dema nds a nd a chieving curriculum objectives.Adopting digita l media in educa tion a ligns with innova tive learning a pproaches tha t levera ge technology to enha nce tea ching and lea rning experiences. Resea rch indica tes that integra ting online technologies, such a s websites a nd discussion boa rds, improves pra ctica l skills, knowledge a cquisition, critica l thinkin g, a nd reflective skills (Ga rcia et a l., 2013; Ca nnon et a l., 2018). Effective curricu lum integra tion require s a crea tive a pproa ch tha t combines technology, peda gogy, a nd content (Ja mes & Polla rd, 2011; McDa niel, 2024).Additiona lly, e-module development supports effective peda gogy by empha sizing intera ctive a nd enga ging tea ching methods to improve lea rning outcomes. Studies high light the need for sta nda rdized methodologies a nd a dvanced technologies in digita l lea rning ga mes for subjects like ma thematics a nd computer science (Voogt et a l., 2013; Anderson, 2020). Furthermore, the concept of cura tion is essentia l in digita l a nd media litera cy education, focusing on student-driven tools to enha nce digita l litera cy (Luka , 2022; Bertram, 2020). Selectin g teaching materia ls necessita tes a ca reful ba la nce between design a nd content, ensuring a lignment with the educa tiona l needs and the overa rching goa ls of the Merdeka Curricu lum, wh ich extends beyond knowledge a nd skills to inc lude the cultiva tion of persona lity tra its reflective of the Pa nca sila profile.
