Abstract

Hometown Cha Cha Cha is a Korean drama that depicts the story of a city dentist who experiences a culture clash when moving from the big city of Seoul to the small village of Gongjin, where he faces values and habits that are very different from the city life he has known. Based on Barthes' semiotic theory, the drama was analysed through three stages, namely denotation, connotation and myth, to reveal how culture shock is represented in the interactions between characters with the main cast, symbols in village life, and differences between city and village. The results of the analysis show that culture shock in the Korean drama Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 1 and 2 is not only depicted through differences in language and customs, but also through symbols contained in food, clothing, and social space in the village community. This research provides insight into how Korean dramas can be an effective medium to display the complexity of culture shock experiences.
