Abstract

The textile industry in Indonesia is experiencing rapid growth of up to 57,40%, accompanied by increased use of synthetic dyes, for example congo red dye. Congo red dye is difficult to decompose naturally in the environment, so an effective waste treatment technique is needed. Photodegradation based on photocatalyst material is an alternative to break down complex compounds into simple components. This study synthesized NiFe2O4/ZnO composites with the green synthesis method using kersen leaf extract (Muntingia calabura L.) as a capping agent. The XRD characterization results obtained a NiFe2O4/ZnO crystal size of 32,95 nm. The band gap value of NiFe2O4/ZnO from UV-VIS DRS characterization is 1,60 eV. The saturation magnetization value of NiFe2O4/ZnO from VSM characterization is 43,51 emu/g. SEM-EDX characterization revealed that the morphology of NiFe₂O₄/ZnO appeared as agglomerated clusters composed of elements Ni (4,82%), Fe (10,68%), O (21,86%), and Zn (62,64%). The pHpzc value of NiFe2O4/ZnO composite is at pH 7.3. The best condition of congo red dye concentration reduction by NiFe2O4/ZnO occurred at pH 5, concentration of 10 mg/L and irradiation time for 90 minutes with the effectiveness of concentration reduction of 94,25%. The degradation rate constant follows pseudo-first order kinetics of 0,0153 min-1 with R2 value of 0,926.
