Abstract
Candida`albicans is normal microflora in the oral-cavity which can be opportunistic pathogen causing oral candidiasis when there is an underlying predisposing condition. Papaya as one of the most widely grown herbal plants in Indonesia has been known can cured diseases. Papaya peel that is not used sometimes only became waste whereas the papaya peel is known contain active compounds that have effect as antifungal, especially raw papaya peel. This study aims to determined the antifungal effect of raw papaya peel extract of variety California and determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of extract against clinical isolates of C. albicans. This study is an experimental laboratory study with post test only control group design. Ethanol extract of papaya peel was obtained from maceration process using 96% ethanol. Antifungal effect testing was carried out in vitro used disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) against clinical isolates of C. albicans. Ethanol extract of papaya peel concentrations consisted of 2,5%, 5%, 10%, and 20% with positive control (nystatin) and negative control (aquadest). The results showed that papaya peel extract have antifungal effect against C. albicans. Concentrations extract of 2,5%, 5%, 10%, and 20% had average inhibition zones respectively 1,56 mm, 0,88 mm, 1,2 mm, and 0,8 mm with MIC 2,5%. Ethanol extract of raw papaya peel of variety California 2,5%, 5%, 10%, and 20% has small antifungal effect against clinical isolates of C. albicans. . Keywords: antifungal, Candida albicans, Carica papaya.
