Abstract

Oral cavity consists of a variety of normal flora, one of them is Staphylococcus aureus. An unbalanced oral cavity condition can turn S. aureus bacteria into pathogens and cause infection in the oral cavity. Papaya peel is reported to have antibacterial properties such as alkaloids, tannins, and steroids. Based on those ingredients, papaya peel extract can be used as an alternative antibacterial agent. The aim of this study was to determined antibacterial effect of unripe papaya peel extract California varieties which can inhibit the growth of S. aureus. This study was an experimental laboratory in vitro. The treatment group used papaya peel extract with a concentration of 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20%. Positive control used 0.2% chlorhexidine while negative control used aquadest. Antibacterial effect testing used agar diffusion (Kirby-Bauer discs). The results showed that the extract of papaya peel have inhibitory at concentration of 10% of 1.05 ± 1.02 mm and a concentration 20% of 3.22 ± 0.81 mm, however, the concentrations of 2.5% and 5% have no inhibition against S. aureus. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the extract of unripe papaya peel California varieties of 10% and 20% concentration have inhibitory effect on the growth of S. aureus which is classified as weak inhibition.
