Abstract
THE EFFECT OF EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL ADMINISTRATION ON TNF α LEVELS, MUSCLE MASS, MUSCLE STRENGTH, AND PERFORMANCE STATUS IN ELDERLY PATIENTS AT RSUP DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG M. Addien Prima Nanda, Yulianto Kusnadi, Nur Riviati, Irsan Saleh Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang Introduction: As life expectancy increases, the elderly become the fastest growing age group in the population. According to WHO in 2020, the number of elderly in Indonesia increased by about 28.8 million. One such challenge in elderly is degenerative disease related to muscle mass, muscle strength and performance status, which increase fall risk and morbidities. Several factors such nutrition intake, hormonal change, infection, increasing ROS, daily physical activity history and inflammation are contributing in age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. Chronic inflammation, known as ‘inflammaging’, was associated with the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α) in extreme longevity, resulted in muscle atrophy. Various molecular mechanisms are involved in regulating muscle mass and function, but only physical exercise and resistance training are able to partially restore muscle mass and strength. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), with its phenolic component, has anti-inflammatory activities which benefically reduce TNF-α levels, prevent inflammaging, increase muscle mass and strength, and improve performance status in the elderly. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study involving 40 elderly outpatiens. Each subject was administered 30 ml of oral EVOO for 8 weeks. Muscle mass and strength, performance status, and TNF-α level evaluations were conducted before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.25. Results: Wilcoxon test analysis shows significant changes in muscle strength (P = 0.004), performance status (P = 0.008), and TNF-α levels before and after intervention. However, there were no significant change found in muscle mass (P = 0.838). Conclusion: Oral EVOO administration improve muscle strength, performance status, and reduce TNF-α levels of elderly patients in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Keywords: Elderly, EVOO, muscle mass, muscle strength, performance status, TNF-α.
