Abstract

The increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus today is largely attributed to poor lifestyle choices, one of which is sugar craving behavior associated with maladaptive eating patterns. This study aims to describe sugar craving behavior among undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive-analytic design. The study involved 92 respondents selected using probability sampling with a disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. The results showed that most respondents were in early adulthood (73.9%), female (89.1%), had a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) (<23) (68.5%), and were at low risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (71.7%). The majority of respondents exhibited high sugar craving behavior (57.6%). High sugar craving behavior was more prevalent among. students with characteristics such as early adulthood age, female gender, a BMI in the obesity range, and a moderate risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study suggests that sugar craving behavior is influenced by both internal and external factors, so further research is necessary to explore these in more depth.
