Abstract
This research objective was to study the potential of biological composite material of matrix nata de coco and strengthened banana fiber. The research was conducted at the home industry nata de coco of Puji's Mother, 32 Ilir, Palembang, Physics Laboratory of Sriwijaya University, and Agricultural Products Chemical Laboratory, Agriculture Technology Department of Sriwijaya University, January to June 2010. The research used description method by observation, tabulation and graphical presentatiom The treatment of banana fiber density was divided into four, shear loading with a density of 1 and 2 millimeters and the axial + shear loading with a density of 2 and 3 millimeters, while treatment of nata de coco was divided into two volumes of a mixture were 127 ml the solution of nata and 16 ml Acetobacter xylinum starter fluid, and 253 ml solution of nata and 32 ml Acetobacter xylinum starter fluid. Tests carried out by testing the tensile strength, compressive strength test and water resistance test. The result of tensile test, compression test, and the highest density-strength ratio is obtained by the specimens with the knitting axial + shear loading highest density of 2 mm and the treatment solution of nata 253 ml and 32 ml Acetobacter xylinum liquid starter, were 14.93 x 106 N.m'2 for tensile strength, 3.82 MPa for compressive strength and 3108.82 for the density-strength ratio. Water resistance test results showed that the composite material was hydrophilic with water absorption capacity between 82 to 102 %. The possible applications of this composite material as an innovative construction materials that carry the load with experience mainly tensile stresses.
