Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of food consumption, agricultural production, and food imports on food security in six ASEAN countries, namely Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, during the period 2000–2021. Food security is a multidimensional issue influenced by the availability, access, and utilization of food. Data were obtained from FAOSTAT, the World Bank, and World in Data, then analyzed using panel data regression with the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) method. The results of the study indicate that food consumption has a significant negative impact due to unbalanced consumption patterns and pressure on natural resources. In contrast, agricultural production and food imports have a significant positive impact. Agricultural production improves supply stability through technological and infrastructure modernization, while food imports help meet domestic needs. However, excessive dependence on imports can increase vulnerability to global price fluctuations. This study recommends a strategy that integrates local food diversification, agricultural technology innovation, and a combination of imports and domestic production to strengthen food security in ASEAN. These findings provide insights for policymakers in designing sustainable strategies to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to food security.
