Abstract

Peatland is land that has a layer of soil that is not perfectly decomposed which is rich in organic matter (C-organic > 18%) with a thickness of 50 cm or more. The organic matter that makes up peat soil is formed from plant remains that have not completely decomposed due to saturated water and poor nutrient conditions. This study aims to determine the characteristics of peatland in the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University and to evaluate the actual and potential land suitability class for mahogany plants (Swietenia macrophylla) on peatland in the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this study is a detailed survey method with a scale of 1: 6,000. The study was conducted at 8 points and drilling will be carried out at each point to take samples that will be taken to the laboratory for chemical property analysis. From the results of the study, several qualities and suitability characteristics were obtained that were very suitable (S1) for the growth of mahogany plants. Among them are temperature quality (tc) and water availability (wa). Then in the quality of the rooting media (rc), including peat maturity and peat depth, it is still classified as a marginally suitable class. Meanwhile, in terms of nutrient retention quality (nr) and nutrient availability (na), the soil pH value and K value are still limiting factors for the growth of mahogany plants, while the N, P, KTK, and organic C values are very suitable for the growth of mahogany plants.
