Abstract

Background: Caries is a multifactorial infectious disease that occurs due to a decrease in salivary pH because of acidic products produced by the substrate metabolism by bacteria. 12 years old of age was determined by WHO as the age of global monitoring for caries because it is estimated at that age permanent teeth have erupted except for the third molar. DMF-T index is an indicator that used to determine the level of dental health for permanent teeth. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between salivary pH and the DMF-T index among 12 years old children at SMP Negeri 17 Palembang. Methods: This analytic observational study with cross-sectional design involved 35 children aged 12 years old at SMP Negeri 17 Palembang. Unstimulated saliva was collected in a centrifuge tube and the pH of the saliva was measured using a digital pH meter and the record the results. Clinical examination was performed to see DMF-T namely decay, missing and filling, then the DMF-T score was recorded on the DMF-T form according to WHO. Result: Data were analyzed by Pearson correlation test. Statistical test results showed that salivary pH with the DMF-T index had a significant relationship (p <0.05). Pearson correlation scores show a negative correlation and the strength of a strong correlation between salivary pH and the DMF-T index. Conclusion: There was a relationship between salivary pH and DMF-T index in 12-year-old children in SMP Negeri 17 Palembang Keywords: 12-year-old children, DMF-T index, caries, salivary pH
