Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is an annual crop that has the potential to absorb carbon emissions. In oil palm plantations, it is common to find weeds of various species that grow under stands of oil palm trees (understory) and litter. Undergrowth in oil palm plantations can be a land cover plant as well as a significant carbon store in addition to oil palm plants themselves. Peatlands have an important role in carbon storage, but converting peatlands into plantations can have an impact on stored carbon stocks. This study aims to estimate the potential of carbon stocks in understory plants and litter in 10 year old oil palm plantations on peatlands of PT Waimusi Agroindah, Ogan Komering Ilir District. The method used was survey with systematic sampling in three research blocks using 50 cm × 50 cm quadrant plots. Carbon analysis was carried out using the dry ignition method (Walkley and Black). The results showed that the average carbon stock in understory plants was 1.86 tons/ha-1, while in litter it was 7.73 tons/ha-1. Equivalent CO₂ stored by understory plants and litter reached 6.84 tons/ha-1 and 28.35 tons/ha-1. These results suggest that litter plays a greater role in carbon storage than understorey vegetation. This finding is expected to be a reference in sustainable peatland management strategies in oil palm plantations.
