Abstract
Peat ecosystems are characterized by the accumulation of organic material that is partially decomposed due to anaerobic conditions. The decomposition of organic matter in peat soils is influenced by the presence of microbes. The total population and diversity of microbes in peat soil is one of the indicators of peat quality. This study aims to determine the distribution of total microbes and their differences at various levels of peat depth in Perigi Village, Pangkalan Lampam District. Soil samples were collected using a detailed survey at a scale of 1:20,000 and stratified random sampling method at depths of 0-30 cm and 30-60 cm. The results showed that at a depth of 0-30 cm the total bacterial colonies ranged from 1,3.104 Cfu g-1 to 2,6.105 Cfu g-1, while at a depth of 30-60 cm the total bacterial colonies ranged from 9,5.103 Cfu g-1 to 3.104 Cfu g-1. The results of the calculation of total fungal colonies in peat soil at a depth of 0-30 cm ranged from 3,5.103 Cfu g-1 to 8,8.103 Cfu g-1. Meanwhile, the total fungi of peat soil at a depth of 30-60 cm ranged from 3.103 Cfu g-1 to 5,2.103 Cfu g-1. The difference in the microbial distribution of bacteria and fungi in peat depths of 0-30 and 30-60 cm is influenced by the different humidity and environmental conditions in each depth zone. Based on the results of statistical tests, peat depth has a significant effect on total bacterial colonies and total fungal colonies, while peat water table height has no significant effect on total bacterial colonies and total fungal colonies. The maturity of sapric peat in terms of total bacterial colonies showed the highest data compared to hemic peat. However, peat maturity is not an indicator that shows the difference between total fungal colonies of hemic and sapric peat.
