Abstract

Introduction: Myopia is an eye refractory anomaly where light focuses in front of the retina. BMI is associated with eyeball length, vitreous chamber depth, and corneal curvature. People with high BMI tend to suffer from hyperopia due to shorter eyeball with swallow vitreous chamber and low corneal curvature radius. Conversely, people with low BMI have longer eyeball with deeper vitreous chamber and high corneal curvature radius. The objective of this research was to analyse correlation between body mass index and myopia in elementary school students in region of work of Merdeka Community Health Clinic and Pembina Community Health Clinic in Palembang. Method: A case-series study had been conducted in Merdeka Community Health Clinic and Pembina Community Health Clinic from November to December 2017. A sample of 38 children with myopia fulfilled the inclusion criterias. General characteristics and ophthalmology were described in the form of tables. Data distribution was analysed with Saphiro Wilk test and correlation between body mass index and myopia was analysed using Spearmen Rho’s correlation test. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 18.0. Result: Out of 38 children with myopia, 25 children (65.97%) were male and 13 children (34.21%) were female with mean age of 10.42 + 0.919 years old (8-12 years old). Mean right eye visual accuity was 1.75 + 1.56 with normal right eye 39.5%, mild right eye myopia 44.7%, severe right eye myopia 15.8%. Mean left eye visual acuity was 1.388 + 1.83 with normal left eye 52.6%, mild left myopia 52.6%, and severe left eye myopia 13.2%. Using Spearman Rho’s test, a weak negative correlation was obtained between body mass index and right eye myopia (r = -0.136; p= 0.417; n= 38); correlation was deemed insignificant. An insignificant weak negative correlation was also obtained between body mass index and left eye myopia (r = - 0.120; p= 0.472; n= 38). Conclusion: There was an insignifanct, weak negative correlation between body mass index and right eye myopia, as well as between body mass index and left eye myopia.
