Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is a horticultural commodity that has high economic value and market demand continues to increase. However, cayenne pepper production is seasonal, so price fluctuations often occur due to an imbalance between supply and demand. One of the main factors in cultivating cayenne pepper is the availability of water, namely excess water can trigger disease and lack of water can cause plant stress. Evapotranspiration-based subsurface irrigation was developed as a solution to provide water according to plant needs. This irrigation system works by replacing water lost due to evaporation and transpiration, so that it can optimize plant growth. In this research, the evapotranspiration irrigation system was modified to SIEVA PET (Plot Evapotranspiration Irrigation System) and tested on cayenne pepper cultivation. This research aims to determine the height of waterlogging at each level of plant growth in the root zone of cayenne pepper on different planting media with SIEVA PET. This research was carried out from November 2024 to February 2025, at the Greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Palembang. The research method used is descriptive method in the form of data collection and direct observation to the field. The results obtained will be presented in the form of graphs and tables. The parameters measured are water content around the roots, field capacity water content, plant height, production yield, temperature, humidity and sunlight intensity. The research results show that the optimal puddle height for cayenne pepper plants in the vegetative phase is 10 cm for A1, and 8-10 cm for A2 and A3. In the flowering phase, the recommended puddle height is 4 cm for A1, A2, and A3. During the fertilization phase, the recommended puddle height is 0-0.7 cm for A1 and A2, and 1 cm for A3. In the ripening phase, there is no recommendation for a pool height according to field capacity, but it can be maintained at 1 cm with a certain drainage system.
