Abstract

Teluk Rasau Lake is one of the fishery reserves located in Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province. The negative impacts of social and economic developments have led to environmental degradation. Illegal fishing practices, habitat destruction, and pollution threats pose challenges to the ecological integrity and fish stock availability in the area. This study aims to analyze the suitability of Teluk Rasau Lake Fishery Reserve based on environmental, social ,economic, culture aspects of the surrounding community and to provide management recommendations for the conservation area of Teluk Rasau Lake based on its suitability. The research was conducted from August to September 2023. Sampling locations were determined using the purposive sampling method. The suitability of Teluk Rasau Lake Fishery Reserve was evaluated through the analysis of the function and effectiveness of the fishery reserve area, considering parameters such as depth, water quality, availability of aquatic plants as riparian vegetation, protection, water area, spawning and feeding grounds, rare/protected species, legal aspects, accessibility, usage conflicts, and the role of the Fishery community supervisory group (CSG). Each parameter was scored (scoring method) based on its importance to the fishery reserve. The results showed that the analysis of the function and effectiveness of Teluk Rasau Lake fishery reserve scored 26 (twenty-six), categorizing it as moderately functional and effective. This indicates that the conservation goals of protecting rare/endemic fish species and increasing fish stocks for the surrounding waters have been optimally achieved. However, community participation involving the role of community supervisory group (CSG) is still low. The co-management approach is quite suitable for the fishery reserve at Teluk Rasau Lake, where collaboration between the government, local community, and other stakeholders can optimize the role and function of Supervisory Community Group (CSG).
