Abstract

Disparities in the utilization of healthcare services between public and private facilities remain evident in South Sumatra Province. This study aims to analyze the determinants of healthcare service utilization based on the type of facility used. A cross-sectional study design was employed using data from the 2023 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS). The sample consisted of 9,693 outpatient respondents and 33,103 inpatient respondents, selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using logistic regression in SPSS and spatial analysis with Q-GIS. The results showed that 23.9% of respondents utilized outpatient services in the past month, while 2.4% accessed inpatient services in the past year. Private facilities were more commonly used for outpatient care, particularly private doctor/midwife practices (49.5%) and clinics (14.4%). Similarly, private hospitals (43%) were more frequently utilized for inpatient care compared to public hospitals (39%). The determinants of service utilization varied by facility type. Health insurance ownership was the main factor influencing outpatient service use at public facilities, while economic status was more dominant at private facilities. Health complaints were the most influential factor for inpatient care at public facilities. In conclusion, there is a significant difference in healthcare utilization between public and private sectors. Policy optimization is necessary to improve access and service quality, particularly in public facilities, in order to reduce existing disparities.
