Abstract

This research about synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HAp) from fish bone cork (Channa striata) and the effect of chitosan addition on hydroxyapatite mechanical properties has been done. This research aimed to determine the effect of temperature and calcination time on hydroxyapatite synthesis, morphology of hydroxyapatite, elements which contained on hydroxyapatite, and the effect of chitosan addition on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite was carried out with precursors Ca(OH)2 and (NH4)2HPO4 and was composited with chitosan. The precipitated HAp was calcined with varying on temperature and calcination time. Characterization of HAp crystalline structures was determined using XRD, HAp morphologies and elements characterization was determined using SEM-EDS, characterization of mechanical properties for hardness was determined using Vickers hardness and compressive strength was determined using autograph. The AAS characterization results show the Ca content in fish bone cork powder was 8.89% and in powder CaO of fish bone cork was 17,80%. The XRD characterization results show the optimum condition of HAp synthesis at 600°C for 1 hour. SEM describes that particles morphologies from HAp form agglomeration and pores. EDS describes that Ca/P ratio of 1.219. The result of characterization of mechanical properties showed that HAp-chitosan composite has increase in compressive strength but decrease in hardness.
