Abstract

Water conservation is one of the biggest challenges in agriculture, especially in regions that frequently experience dry seasons or prolonged droughts. Water scarcity often becomes a major obstacle to supporting plant growth, particularly for vegetable crops that have high water requirements and are more sensitive to changes in soil moisture. Impermeable layers, which are typically made of materials such as plastic or other synthetic substances, have proven effective in reducing water evaporation from the soil surface. A combination of mulch and impermeable layers can provide even more optimal results, especially in very dry areas or soils with low water retention capacity. The use of these two layers can create ideal conditions for vegetable crop growth, even in dry weather. This study aims to develop a water conservation method using impermeable layers to support vegetable cultivation during the dry season. The research was conducted from July 2024 to August 2024 at ATC and the Soil and Water Engineering Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya Campus. The method used in this study is the Randomized Block Design (RAK). Water conservation through the use of impermeable layers is an effective strategy to support vegetable growth during the dry season. By reducing water loss due to evaporation and enhancing soil moisture retention, impermeable layers help ensure adequate water availability for crops. This method not only conserves irrigation water but also improves the efficiency of existing water resources. The implementation of this technique, such as using plastic mulch or clay layers, can increase agricultural productivity and ensure plant sustainability in the face of drought challenges. Therefore, applying water conservation through impermeable layers is crucial for managing sustainable agriculture and responding to climate change. Konservasi air merupakan salah satu tantangan terbesar dalam pertanian, terutama di daerah yang sering mengalami musim kemarau atau kekeringan panjang. Kekurangan air sering menjadi hambatan utama dalam mendukung pertumbuhan tanaman, terutama pada tanaman sayuran yang memiliki kebutuhan air yang tinggi dan cenderung lebih sensitif terhadap perubahan kelembapan tanah. Lapisan kedap, yang umumnya terdiri dari bahan seperti plastik atau bahan sintetis lainnya, telah terbukti efektif dalam mengurangi penguapan air dari permukaan tanah. kombinasi antara mulsa dan lapisan kedap dapat memberikan hasil yang lebih optimal, terutama di daerah yang sangat kering atau pada tanah yang memiliki daya retensi air rendah. Penggunaan dua lapisan ini dapat menciptakan kondisi yang ideal bagi pertumbuhan tanaman sayuran meskipun dalam keadaan cuaca kering. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mendapatkan metode konservasi air menggunakan lapisan kedap air untuk mendukung budidaya tanaman sayur-sayuran dimusim kemarau. Penelitin ini telah dilaksanakan pada Bulan Juli 2024 sampai Bulan Agustus 2024 Penelitian dilaksanakan di ATC dan Laboratorium Teknik Tanah dan Air Jurusan Teknologi Pertanian Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Sriwijaya, Kampus Indralaya. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah Metode RAK (Rancang Acak Kelompok). Konservasi air melalui penggunaan lapisan kedap merupakan strategi yang efektif untuk mendukung pertumbuhan tanaman sayuran selama musim kemarau. Dengan mengurangi kehilangan air akibat evaporasi dan meningkatkan retensi kelembaban tanah, lapisan kedap membantu memastikan ketersediaan air yang cukup untuk tanaman. Metode ini tidak hanya menghemat penggunaan air irigasi, tetapi juga meningkatkan efisiensi penggunaan sumber daya air yang ada. Implementasi teknik ini,seperti penggunaan mulsa plastik atau lapisan tanah liat, dapat meningkatkan produktivitas pertanian dan memastikan keberlanjutan tanaman di tengah tantangan kekeringan. Oleh karena itu, penerapan konservasi air melalui lapisan kedap sangat penting dalam mengelola pertanian yang berkelanjutan dan responsif terhadap perubahan iklim.
