Abstract

Burn injuries are often associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Various previous studies have linked mortality to factors such as age, sex, injury site, burn TBSA, etiology, and the presence of inhalation injury; burn patients with systemic complications tend to account for the greatest share of deaths. Epidemiological data and research on burn patients in Indonesia remain limited. At RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin, no studies are yet available discussing on the risk factors contributing to patient mortality. This study employed a descriptive cross‑sectional design with a retrospective approach. Secondary data, in the form of medical records, were obtained from RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin within the period of January–December 2022 and selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria defined by the author. A total of 32 burn patients were included. The overall mortality rate was 15.6% (5 patients). Cases resulting in death were most frequent among these following groups: patients aged 10–18 years (2 patients; 66.7%) and those aged ≥ 60 years (2 patients; 100%); female (3 patients; 25%); TBSA involvement >50% (5 patients; 71.43%); burn depths classified as deep dermal (5 patients; 23.8%), followed by full‑thickness (1 patient; 12.5%); flame‑related burns (5 patients; 25%); patients with confirmed inhalation injury and those with suspected inhalation injury, accounting for 20% and 25%, respectively; and patients who developed systemic complications (5 patients; 41.7%). In this study, several risk factors associated with mortality were identified, including advanced age, female sex, flame burns, extensive burn size and severe depth, the presence of inhalation injury, and accompanying systemic complications.
