Abstract

The triple burden of malnutrition is currently a global health issue that affects many countries around the world. One of the problems is malnutrition, which can affect children, adolescents and adults. In pregnant women, nutritional status is an important indicator in determining health status. One of the most common problems found in pregnant women is chronic energy deficiency (CED). Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further research related to the factors associated with the incidence of CED in pregnant women. This study used a cross-sectional study design using secondary data sourced from the Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) in 2023 with a population of pregnant women in Indonesia. The sampling technique was done by total sampling so that the number of samples in this study was 4520 pregnant women in Indonesia. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that 14% of pregnant women in Indonesia were in a condition of CED (LiLA <23.5 cm). The bivariate analysis showed that maternal age, parity, education, region of residence, supplementary feeding (PMT), and defecation behavior had a p-value ≤0.05, which means that these variables are associated with the incidence of CED in pregnant women. while in multivariate analysis, the variables of maternal age, region of residence, and PMT are the most dominant variables associated with CED in pregnant women in Indonesia with the number of household members being a confounding variable. It can be concluded that the factors that cause the occurrence of CED in pregnant women are very complex. Improving health programs, completeness of ANC, equitable distribution of facilities, and pregnancy preparation should be a priority so that health problems including CED in pregnant women can be addressed and prevented. In addition, direct factors for CED should be considered for inclusion in future studies.
