Abstract

This study aims to uncover the historical development of the Pegagan Ilir Suku II Marga in South Sumatra Province between 1950 and 1983. The focus of the research includes aspects of governance, economy, society, culture, and the process of abolishing the traditional marga administrative system. As a customary legal community unit, the marga played a vital role in local governance structures from the era of the Palembang Sultanate, through Dutch colonial rule, to post-independence Indonesia. Using a historical approach and research methods such as heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this study successfully reconstructs the dynamic development of the Pegagan Ilir Suku II Marga in a comprehensive manner. The findings reveal that Pegagan Ilir Suku II Marga had an organized governmental structure led by a Pasirah (head of the marga). This system reflected the community's strong ties to customary values and kinship. Economically, the community relied on agriculture, river trade, and local natural resources. Social and cultural life was marked by mutual cooperation traditions (gotong royong), the central role of mosques, marriage customs, and linguistic diversity. However, in 1983, the marga system was officially abolished by the government through South Sumatra Governor's Decree No. 142/KPTS/III/1983 and was replaced by the village governance system.
