Abstract

Office workers spend more of their working time in a sitting position while working, so the physical activity during work tends to be less. Lack of physical activity can be one of the factors that affect blood sugar levels in worker’s bodies, thereby increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in office workers. This study aims to analyze the relationship between sedentary work behavior and blood sugar levels in X, Y, and Z office workers in Palembang City. This study is a quantitative study using a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study was 60 workers using a purposive sampling technique. Measurement of sedentary work behavior was measured using the Occupational Sitting and Physical Activity Questionnaire (OSPAQ) questionnaire and blood sugar levels using a digital blood sugar level checker (glucometer). The data analysis were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test and Fisher’s Exact test. The results showed that 93.3% of workers experienced sedentary work behavior and 25% of workers had high blood sugar levels. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between body mass index with blood sugar levels. However, there was no relationship between sedentary work behavior, age, gender, and work period with blood sugar levels. Therefore, the office is advised to conduct health checks at least once a year and routine exercises. Workers are also advised to reduce sitting time during work by stretching for 10 - 15 minutes every 2 hours of sitting position, doing light movements such as walking to get a drink of water, and exercising regularly for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week outside working hours.
