Abstract
Based on the report from the Ministry of Health, the incidence rate of pediatric tuberculosis in 2023 showed an increase of more than 2.5 times compared to the reported cases in 2021. A total of 18,122 pediatric tuberculosis cases were recorded in South Sumatra Province in 2022. Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital in Palembang serves as the main referral center for tuberculosis patients in the South Sumatra region. This study aims to analyze the relationship between age, gender, nutritional status, BCG immunization, parental education, parental income, exposure to cigarette smoke, contact history, and medical history with the incidence of tuberculosis among children aged 0–14 years at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital Palembang. This study employed a case-control design with a sample ratio of 1:2, consisting of 34 children with tuberculosis (positive cases) and 68 without tuberculosis (negative cases). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. The results of the chi-square test indicated a significant association between contact history (p-value = 0.001) and the incidence of tuberculosis in children. However, no significant relationship was found between age, gender, nutritional status, BCG immunization, parental education, parental income, exposure to cigarette smoke, or medical history and the incidence of tuberculosis in children. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that contact history (p-value = 0.001; OR = 7.838; CI = 2.248–27.320) was the most dominant variable influencing the incidence of tuberculosis in children. Therefore, children with a history of contact should be encouraged to increase their awareness of the importance of protecting themselves from tuberculosis by limiting exposure and undergoing early screening for timely detection.
