Abstract

The dual role of being both a mother and a PPDS Sp-1 resident may lead to prolonged maternal separation, which can affect children’s emotional development. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and associated factors of behavioral problems in children of PPDS Sp-1 mothers at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted involving 56 children of 43 resident mothers. Behavioral problems were assessed using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC-17). The results showed that 12 children (21.4%) experienced behavioral problems, all categorized as internalizing disorders, such as anxiety, sadness, and withdrawal. No externalizing or attention-related disorders were found. Bivariate analysis showed no statistically significant association between behavioral problems and the child’s age at the time of separation, weekly separation duration (>40 hours), maternal residency year, maternal age, or department of training (p > 0.05). Although not statistically significant, the proportion of internalizing behavioral issues remains notable and warrants attention. These findings suggest that other unmeasured factors may influence the child’s psychological condition. The study recommends further research using a multidimensional approach and emphasizes the importance of emotional support and caregiving systems for families of medical residents.
