Abstract
ABSTRACT Association between dietary intake, water intake, physical activity and defecation posture with defecation pattern in adolescents Adolescents often experience changes in bowel habits due to their lifestyle, potentially affecting overall health and quality of life. Defecation patterns—frequency, consistency, and stool color—can be influenced by fiber intake, water intake, physical activity, and defecation posture. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between these factors and defecation patterns in adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to November 2024 in two junior high schools in Palembang, Indonesia. A total of 302 adolescents were selected using a multistage random sampling technique. Data on dietary intake, water intake, physical activity, and defecation posture were collected via questionnaires. Statistical analysis included Chi-square and logistic regression tests, with a significance level of p<0.05. Among the participants, 12.5% had abnormal defecation patterns. The majority (87%) defecated 1-2 times/day to 3 times/week, 89% had Bristol stool consistency type 3,4,5, and 100% had normal stool color. The average fiber intake was 4 g/day, and water intake was 1600 ml/day. Most participants (81.5%) engaged in light physical activity, and 64.9% used a squatting posture. No significant associations were found between fiber intake, water intake, and physical activity with defecation patterns. However, adolescents using a sitting posture had a higher risk of abnormal defecation (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.04-4.11, p=0.04). Defecation posture significantly influences defecation patterns. Further studies should explore the effects of fiber intake, water intake, and physical activity on individual components of defecation patterns. Keywords: defecation pattern, fiber intake, water intake, physical activity, defecation posture, adolescents.
