Abstract
Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is one of the horticultural plant commodities that contains quite high nutrients, and this plant has been widely spread in agriculture in several countries in the world such as Indonesia. According to statistical data, the number of eggplant production in Indonesia has decreased every year. The decline in eggplant production is influenced by several factors, including due to pest and disease attacks. Pesticides are one of the strategies commonly used by eggplant farmers, because of their easy application and fast results. The rise of pesticide application as a control with a high level of frequency of use, has a high level of frequency of use, has a negative impact that arises and damages the ecosystem and diversity in it. This study aims to determine the level of compliance of farmers in the use of pesticides and their effects on the population, intensity and percentage of pest and disease attacks on eggplant plants in South Sumatra Province. This research was carried out in several eggplant fields in South Sumatra Province, precisely in the cities of Prabumulih, Palembang, and Musi Banyuasin, which was carried out from July to October 2024. Data collection in this study was carried out by surveying with the purposive sampling method by interviewing eggplant farmers regarding the use of pesticides. The method used in this study uses a direct survey method on several Papaya plantations. Observation of farmers land by observing beneficial pests, diseases, and insects. The observation was carried out using a simple random sampling technique by observing 50 sample plants with 5 different points. Based on the interviews that have been conducted, it was found that the average age of farmers who dominate ranges from 37-50 years, with an average education of junior high school (SMP). A total of 2187 insects were obtained from the orders Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Orthoptera, with 835 insects coming from the order Hemiptera, namely the Aphis gossypii (Aphid) species. In this study, Cercospora sp. is the most common disease found to attack eggplant plants with a disease attack intensity rate of up to 30%. The average compliance score of eggplant farmers obtained was 409.3 and was classified as very high, which means that the level of knowledge of eggplant farmers in South Sumatra Province is quite good in the use of pesticides. The correlation obtained between farmers' compliance scores and pests and diseases themselves is weak, because pests and diseases have experienced a resurgence.
