Abstract
HIV/AIDS remains a serious public health issue in Indonesia, including among adolescents. According to UNAIDS data from 2023, the total number of people living with HIV in Indonesia in 2022 reached 530,000, with 18,000 of them aged 0–14 years. Adolescent understanding of HIV/AIDS is crucial for improving access to HIV services and reducing risky behaviors. Based on the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (SDKI) on Adolescent Reproductive Health (KRR), both male and female adolescents reported having heard of HIV/AIDS; however, there were still adolescents who had never heard of it. Low levels of knowledge and negative attitudes toward People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are key barriers to effective prevention efforts. This study aims to examine adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS education using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach at SMP Negeri 23 Palembang. This research employed a qualitative method, utilizing data collection techniques such as Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), visual methods (mind mapping and collage), and in-depth interviews with teachers. The informants included 18 students as the main participants and 5 teachers. The findings revealed that most adolescents lacked adequate understanding of HIV, particularly regarding its prevention and transmission. Furthermore, there is currently no existing educational program specifically focused on HIV/AIDS prevention. Students’ attitudes toward PLWHA also tend to be negative. The current educational efforts are considered inadequate in both content and delivery methods. Students expressed the need for more comprehensive, interactive, and engaging education supported by modern learning media. It is recommended that the government, through the Ministry of Education and the Health Office, develop an integrated HIV/AIDS education curriculum that is relevant to adolescents’ needs and implement it through collaborative efforts involving schools and local health centers (puskesmas).
