Abstract

The excessive use of smartphones has become a common phenomenon among university students. Dependence on smartphones can affect the quality of sleep due to blue light exposure and excessive use before bedtime. Poor sleep quality can impact physical health, emotional balance, and cognitive function. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between smartphone addiction and sleep quality among students of Universitas Sriwijaya. This study uses a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach, involving a sample of 108 students from Universitas Sriwijaya. Data were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The data were analyzed using chi-square tests, simple logistic regression, and logistic regression models for risk factors. The bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between sleep quality and smartphone addiction (p-value = 0.000), physical activity (p-value = 0.050), and academic level (p-value = 0.001). However, no significant relationship was found with age (p-value = 0.533). Based on the multivariate analysis, the multiple logistic regression test revealed that high smartphone addiction increases the risk of poor sleep quality by 7.9 times after controlling for academic level and physical activity. It can be concluded that smartphone addiction negatively affects the sleep quality of students. Therefore, it is recommended that students reduce smartphone or social media use before bedtime, pay attention to their sleep patterns, and avoid unnecessary late-night habits to improve their sleep quality. It is also suggested that Universitas Sriwijaya limit smartphone use during learning processes, restrict non-academic internet access on campus, enhance counseling and education services related to sleep quality, and provide better sports facilities.
