Abstract
The incidence of ARI (Acute Respiratory Tract Infection) in toddlers in the Sabokingking Health Center working area of Palembang City is among the top 10 most common diseases in the region. And based on previous research, the physical environment of the house and smoking habits of family members affect the incidence of ARI disease in toddlers. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the condition of the physical environment of the house and the smoking habits of household members with the incidence of ARI in toddlers in the Sabokingking Health Center working area of Palembang City. This research is quantitative and uses a cross sectional study design with proportional random sampling technique on 81 toddlers aged 0-59 months. The data analysis was univariate analysis to determine the frequency distribution, bivariate analysis to determine the relationship between variables with Chi-Square test, and multivariate analysis to determine the most dominant variable with multiple logistic regression test. The results of univariate analysis showed that toddlers in the working area of the Sabokingking health center who experienced ARI were 36 toddlers (44.4%). The results of bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between ventilation area (P = 0.002), wall type (P = 0.000), and smoking habits of household members (P = 0.019) and there is no relationship between the variables of humidity, temperature, lighting, occupancy density, and floor type. The results of multivariate analysis showed that the most significant variable for the incidence of ARI in toddlers was ventilation area (P = 0.001) (PR = 9.472; CI = 2.603-34.463) after being controlled by the variables of temperature, occupancy density, type of wall, and smoking habits of household members. People who have an unqualified ventilation area with an area of ≤10% of the floor area are expected to maximize the function of the ventilation by increasing the area of ventilation or air circulation holes and recommended to always open windows regularly so that fresh air exchange can reduce the risk of ARI incidence in toddlers.
