Abstract
Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome of systemic infection that occurs in newborns up to 28 days of age and is the third leading cause of death in neonates. The diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, physical examination and laboratory, with blood culture as the gold standard. Pre-analytical factors such as inadequate antisepsis and insufficient blood volume may affect the results. Some studies have shown that taking blood cultures from two sites can reduce false-positive results and unnecessary antibiotic use. However, it adds to the burden of costs and medical measures. This study was conducted to compare between proportion of culture-proven diagnosis of neonatal sepsis based on the results of one blood culture and two blood cultures in neonates. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital. The study subjects were neonates with clinical sepsis and probable sepsis that hospitalized between July – and November 2024. Two blood cultures were taken simultaneously in all 75 subjects that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Thirty two of 75 subjects showed positive blood culture in one blood culture or both blood cultures. The proportion of culture-proven diagnoses of neonatal sepsis based on the result of one blood culture was 29.3%. In contrast, the proportion of culture-proven diagnoses of neonatal sepsis from two blood cultures was 13.3% in neonates at Mohammad Hossein Hospital Palembang. The proportion of culture-proven diagnosis of neonatal sepsis from one blood culture is greater than culture-proven neonatal sepsis from two blood cultures.
