Abstract

Renewable energy is an alternative source that serves as a solution to energy limitations and an effort to minimize pollution and emissions from several non-renewable energy sources, such as oil-based fuels, coal, and others. Solar energy is one of the most promising renewable energy options, especially in tropical regions like Indonesia. Photovoltaic (PV) or solar panels are media that can be used to convert solar radiation into direct current (DC) electricity. However, the conversion process by solar panels is not without its drawbacks. Solar energy that is not converted into electricity turns into heat, causing an increase in the PV temperature, which in turn reduces the efficiency of the solar panel. One material that can be used to cool solar panels is Crude Palm Oil (CPO). CPO is also categorized as a Phase Change Material (PCM), which can cool the solar panel by absorbing and storing thermal energy. CPO can absorb a portion of the heat that is otherwise wasted on the back side of the solar panel, thereby potentially lowering its temperature. Moreover, the use of CPO as a cooling medium can also affect the output of the solar panel, such as voltage and current. In this study, the use of CPO has not yet been effective in significantly lowering the surface temperature of the solar panel, which may be due to the insufficient thickness of the PCM plate. However, an average efficiency increase of 8.11% was observed for the panel utilizing CPO, and it was capable of absorbing heat ranging from 77 W to 116 W depending on the weather conditions during data collection..
