Abstract

Background: Cerebral toxoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections found in patients with HIV/AIDS, particularly when CD4+ counts fall below 100 cells/mm³. This infection can result in death or permanent neurological disability if not diagnosed and treated promptly and accurately. Research on factors influencing mortality from cerebral toxoplasmosis in Indonesia, especially in South Sumatra, remains limited. Objective: To identify the factors associated with mortality in patients with cerebral toxoplasmosis at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Methods: This was an observational analytic study with a retrospective cohort approach. Data were obtained from the medical records of patients diagnosed with cerebral toxoplasmosis and treated in the Neurology Department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital (RSMH) from January 2022 to December 2024. A total of 36 patients who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test and Fisher Exact Test to evaluate the association between clinical variables and mortality. Results: The majority of subjects were male (77.8%) and aged between 30–39 years (55.6%). Most had CD4+ counts below 100 cells/mm³ and normal to undernourished nutritional status. No statistically significant association was found between the studied factors (age, sex, BMI, level of consciousness, CD4+ count, hyponatremia, number of lesions, fever, and comorbidities) and mortality. Conclusion: None of the variables analyzed showed a statistically significant association with mortality in patients with cerebral toxoplasmosis. Keywords: Cerebral toxoplasmosis, HIV/AIDS, mortality
