Abstract
One of the major obstacles faced during the operation of solar panels is overheating due to excessive radiation from the sun and high ambient temperature. To overcome the temperature rise of solar panels and increase their efficiency, cooling of solar panels is required. The use of Phase Change Material (PCM) in the form of beeswax as a passive cooling method for solar panels can be implemented to absorb heat and store heat so that there is a decrease in the surface temperature of solar panels. In this research, the solar panel used is a monocrystalline type with a length of 1020 mm and a width of 620 mm, with a maximum output power of 100 W. During the research using the same two types of solar panels were evaluated, one using phase change material in the form of beeswax and without beeswax. The solar panels were installed at a 15° inclination. The study started at 10:00 am and ended at 4:00 pm for three days. The results showed that the surface temperature of solar panels using beeswax for three days was between 61°C-72°C and solar panels without beeswax was between 50°C-55°C. The use of beeswax has not been effective in reducing the temperature of solar panels due to the small gap between the back surface of the solar panel and the beeswax radiator which acts as a thermal insulator and the lack of thickness of the beeswax. However, solar panels using beeswax experienced an average increase in solar panel efficiency of 8.12%
