Abstract

Background : Falls are a major determinant of disability, loss of independence and poor quality of life in the Parkinson’s disease population. The prevalence of falls in Parkinson’s disease ranges from 38% to 87%. A limited number of studies have investigated fall risk factors in Parkinson's disease patients in Indonesia. Methods: This study was an analytical study of cross-sectional design, using primary data from checklist and secondary data from medical records of Parkinson’s disease patients at the Neurology Outpatient Clinics of RS Mohammad Hoesin and RS Pusri Palembang from November 2024 to January 2025. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses to determine the factors associated with falls in Parkinson’s disease patients. Results: Among 51 patients studied, 56.9% experienced falls. Disease duration ≥ 5 years (OR = 1.53–26.22; 95% CI, p = 0.010), presence of orthostatic hypotension (OR = 1.18–21.85; 95% CI, p = 0.029), and use of anticholinergic drugs (OR = 1.18–21.85; 95% CI, p = 0.029) were significantly associated with falls. Conclusion: Longer disease duration, presence of orthostatic hypotension, and use of anticholinergic medications are major risk factors for falls in patients with Parkinson’s disease. These findings may serve as a basis for fall prevention education in Parkinson’s disease patients. Keywords: Parkinson’s disease, falls, disease duration, orthostatic hypotension, anticholinergic drugs
